Pediatric Care Q & A

What happens at a pediatric exam?

Your child’s annual physical, commonly known as a well-baby or well-child exam, involves evaluating your child’s overall wellbeing and ensuring they’re progressing healthfully. Pediatric visits can include:

  • Height and weight check
  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Head-to-toe evaluation
  • Booster shots or immunizations
  • Blood draw or urinalysis
  • Dietary and nutrition counseling

If your child needs a specialized physical for school or sports, bring your necessary paperwork to your visit with you. They might need additional screenings for these types of physicals.

Which vaccines does my child need?

Your little one starts getting injections from the day they’re born. Most vaccines and immunizations are relatively standard, depending on your child’s age. Some of the most common types of shots babies, children, and teens need include:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Rotavirus vaccine
  • Chickenpox (varicella)
  • Meningococcal and pneumococcal
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV)
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP)

Dr. Munoz usually recommends flu shots for children who are six months and older, since their immune system isn’t fully developed. Because the flu strain, and thus the flu vaccine, changes each season, make sure your child gets an updated flu shot every year.

How often does my child need to see their pediatrician?

It depends on their age. Newborn babies and infants need more frequent check-ups (well-baby exams), usually about every 2-3 months until 18 months of age. After that, your little one needs to come in roughly every six months, until they reach the age of three.

As long as your child is generally healthy and you don’t have any urgent issues, plan on booking routine well-child physicals every year after age three. In many cases, you can book your child’s annual visit and school or sports physical together at Munoz Urgent Care. So if you know your child needs a specialized exam soon, just let the team know so they can set aside enough time to perform all the additional testing or exams your child may need.
